LEWIS J. SARET concentrates his practice in the area of federal taxation, with particular emphasis on estate and business succession planning.
Mr. Saret is nationally recognized for his sophisticated estate planning, asset protection and wealth preservation expertise, and is listed in The Best Lawyers in America, as a Top Trust & Estates Lawyer by Washingtonian Magazine, and in Super Lawyers. He focuses on enabling clients to preserve and maintain control over their business interests and investments, while minimizing applicable gift, estate and generation-skipping transfer taxes. Mr. Saret employs a number of techniques to accomplish these goals, including a variety of trusts, insurance arrangements, succession planning for closely held businesses, estate freeze transactions, and charitable planning.
Mr. Saret is both an attorney and a Certified Public Accountant. He is an active member of several bar, professional, and community organizations. He currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Fiduciary Income Tax Committee of the American Bar Association Section of Taxation, and as Co-Chair of the Personal Financial Planning Club of the University Club of Washington DC. Mr. Saret previously served as a Director of the Washington, DC Estate Planning Council (the "Council"), and Co-Chair of the Council's Programs Committee, Vice-Chair of the Asset Protection Planning Committee of the Real Property, Probate and Trust Section of the American Bar Association, Chair of the Estate and Gift Tax Committee of the Greater Washington Society of CPAs, Chair of the Planned Giving Committee for B'nai B'rith International, and as Chair of the University Club's Performing Arts Club Within a Club. Mr. Saret also served on the Board of Governors of B'nai B'rith International, the Steering Committee of the Phillips Contemporaries of the Phillips Collection, and the Forums and High Tech Committees of the National Press Club. Mr. Saret received a Vivien Award from the National Press Club in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Forums Committee.
Mr. Saret received his B.B.A. from Lamar University, his M.B.A. and Masters in Accounting from Rice University, and his J.D. from the George Washington University School of Law.
Mr. Saret is a prolific author and frequent speaker on tax and estate planning issues. He is a regular columnist for CCH's Taxes - The Tax Magazine, and a regular blogger for Forbes Magazine. He has also co-authored numerous books, including Valuation of Closely Held Businesses: Tax and Legal Issues, Asset Protection Strategies: Tax and Legal Aspects, and Business Workout Strategies: Tax and Legal Aspects. He served as General Editor of the Journal of Asset Protection, which was published by the RIA Group, as a Member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Estate Tax Planning Advisory, published by Panel Publishers, and assisted with the 1997-1998 revision of Partnerships & Joint Ventures Involving Tax-Exempt Organizations, published by Wiley Law Publishing. Mr. Saret is also the co-founder of the Wealth Strategies Journal, an online journal of wealth management. Mr. Saret also speaks regularly on estate and asset protection topics, including having taught several continuing legal education programs at the District of Columbia Bar Association.
